It all began in 1993, with a little idea and a lot of passion. Tara Wegdam, a native of Nashville TN, opened a store in the Netherlands where she lived at the time, and where she met her husband, Ben Wegdam. The store was a collection of many unique home goods, combining her love for Europe, travel, art and design with her retail instincts.
After seven years of life together in Holland, Tara & Ben made the decision to move. In 2000, they put the old store in an ocean container and shipped it to Middleburg, VA. The first Crème de la Crème opened up as a sub-renting space in a salon shortly after. The success of the small store on a side street in Middleburg led Tara & Ben to move to a larger space on the main walk in town. Today, that little idea has grown to include three locations and a whole new family who contribute to the passion and success of our stores.

Julie Kennedy came to Crème de la Crème as a downtown Frederick resident of 12 years. She loves everything Frederick! Originally from Wisconsin and having lived around the country, she finally planted her roots and family in a town she immediately fell in love with. Throughout her professional career, Julie has thrived in the field of Sales & Marketing. She has worked in retail management with Talbots and Marshall Fields of Chicago. Her local employers include Wormald Homes & Firestone’s Market. She has three grown daughters and enjoys cooking, great food and wine, travel, reading and spending as much time as she can with her girls.

Lisa Anne Phipps, also known as L.A., grew up in Norfolk, VA where her enjoyment of the area’s rich history fueled her love for collecting vintage clothing and antiques. At a young age, L.A. became interested in pursuing a career in acting and it was there that she discovered a talent for costumes. She graduated with a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Not long after she found herself in Los Angeles pursuing work with freelance ward-robing and luxury retailers.
After a 30-year career on the West Coast, L.A. is excited to return to Richmond and bring the beautiful and unique flair of Crème de la Crème to the City of Monuments! She has many favorites in the store but says John Robshaw is her absolute favorite, “There is nothing like the perfect pop of color to give a room your own personal flair!”
